What You Should Know About HDMI Cables

You're seeing the marvel that is High Definition TV, in a hundred different monitors at your local retail outlet. It can be very exciting, but confusing. So, you pick out your baby, buy it, and take it home. Following a storm of unwrapping, and the plugging in of cables, you have...a picture that doesn't even come close to what you saw in the store. Annoyed, you finally decide to read the manual (something most people would never think to do), see a reference to a type of High Definition connection called HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), and realize that's exactly what you need to go out and get. So back to your local Retailer you go, only to be confronted with DVD players that Upscale, HD-DVD Players, Blu-Ray Players, Video Game Consoles and dozens of other products that use this same new Interface. Just when you thought you understood your new HDTV, you are thwarted by the numerous choices available.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Older Analog style video connections did not offer nearly the connection standard of HDMI, which allows a single cable connection to pass both Audio and Video signals; this is the new High Definition age connection standard. If your TV supports Full HD, make sure you have an HDMI cable to take advantage of this. Rather than a multitude of cords and a maze of cables snaked behind your TV and entertainment system, HDMI allows the best of both worlds by combining audio and visual into one single digital cable.

To help you learn what to purchase and why, let us briefly discuss HDTV resolutions and their meanings.

HDTV Resolutions:

- 480i (480 interlaced lines of resolution) Also known as what you've watched on normal TV for years

- 480p (480 Progressive lines of resolution) Known as SDTV, progressively scanning images from a DVD player creates a nicer, smoother image on your SDTV/HDTV

- 720p (720 Progressive lines of Resolution) This is your initial step into HDTV. Allowing for 720 lines of resolution, nearly twice that of 480p, provides a much smoother image on a High Definition TV

- 1080i (1080 interlaced lines of Resolution) Currently the greatest resolution provided by Satellite and Cable operators, offering exceptional quality picture on a television capable of displaying 1080i

- 1080p (1080 Progressive lines of Resolution) Also known as Full HD, 1080p is currently "IT" in the market place in terms of best quality picture.

Now that you understand the progression of HDTV Resolutions, let's figure out what all those numbers really mean on that new HDTV you've just purchased.

When you are selecting the cables to connect your HDMI equipped devices, these are some elements to keep in mind.

As you will be spending a good bit on the cable, make sure you get one which is future proofed - even though your TV programs aren't broadcast in 1080p, the latest DVD and game consoles are, so get a cable that is 1080p certified. To ensure that it transmits video as well as lossless audio, make sure the cable is HDMI 1.3. Many cables longer than 10 feet begin to lose quality, so make sure that the cable is certified for 1080p. Lastly, pay attention to how strained the cable is, because most versions don't have any sort of locking device, and it can wiggle loose.

That's it. Now it is time to purchase a HDMI cable, so that you may enjoy that vibrant video and crisp audio that you fell in love with at the store!

Plasma Calibration Without Spending A Single Dime

Ok, you've gone out and bought a brand spanking new plasma TV, but how do you make sure that you're getting the best picture out of it? To do that you need to adjust the picture settings on your plasma TV, otherwise known as "plasma calibration" in the AV industry.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Before you start, you should know that the best calibration for your plasma TV will depend on your source material (i.e. what you're watching), your input device (e.g. DVD player or satellite box) and the amount of ambient light in your home environment... among other things. You should also be aware that your plasma TV needs to be run in for at least 200 hours to allow the phosphors to stabilize, or else you will have to repeat your plasma TV calibration in the future.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

You may not own a plasma TV calibration DVD, so this article will try to walk you through the steps using readily available material. Remember to use the best available connection to connect your input device to your plasma TV. In descending order, the cleanest signal (and hence best picture quality) can be obtained via: HDMI = DVI > VGA = component > SCART (RGB) > S-Video > Composite.

1. Adjust Brightness. This actually determines the black level on your plasma TV: too high a setting and black will look gray; too low and dark grays are swallowed into blackness. To set brightness to its proper level, simply play a DVD with lots of black scenes (e.g. opening scene from Star Wars). Now crank your brightness up until the black on your plasma TV look gray, then slowly dial your brightness down until the black in the movie JUST matches the black on the black bars on top and bottom of the movie.

2. Adjust Contrast. This determines the white level and is responsible for how much light your plasma TV actually emits. To set contrast correctly, play a DVD scene containing a shiny bald head/forehead (e.g. The Fifth Element). Now increase contrast until the bald patch is glaringly hurting your eyes, and then tone it down until you're satisfied that you can see all the detail within the white.

3. Adjust Sharpness. For most poorly-encoded source material you want to use this to enhance the edges, but if done excessively this will introduce haloing and ringing around edges. It's best to bring up a "User Menu" (from your DVD, satellite box, etc) to adjust sharpness: increase it until lots of ringing artifacts occur around the edges of the words, then decrease it until the ringing just disappears.

4. Adjust Color. Color can either be too saturated or too dull... either way the picture will not look right, with the most noticeable errors found in skin tones and green foliage. As a rough guide, you can use a DVD scene with a hand and tinker with the color until the color matches that of your own hand.

What I've described above is 4 basic steps for plasma calibration using only what's available to you. If you wish to strive for more accuracy you can get a HDTV calibration DVD, but you'll need to know which one to buy and how to use it to calibrate plasma TV because the majority of them are still catered for the CRT market.

Netflix Tips - Getting the Most Out of Your Netflix Subscription

Netflix was established in 1997, and they offer the ability to rent DVDs online via the Internet. I initially joined Netflix in 1999. I was not satisfied with the service and canceled my membership three months later. Fast forward to 2005, and the buzz in my workplace is about Netflix. My co-workers tell me service is great and they love it, and I tell them I hated it. I waited about ten days for my first DVD, and I never received any other DVDs. I was a member for three months. I forgot I was a member because I never received any DVDs. My co-workers tell me differently and I decided to try Netflix again. After three years I am still with Netflix, and I have convinced countless co-workers to join, and now I am going to share a few of my Netflix Tips with you.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Distribution Center - Having a distribution center near your home or mailing address will determine how quickly you receive your DVDs. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Distribution Center for Hawaii uses a Honolulu PO Box. If I put my DVD in the mail on Monday, Netflix will receive the DVD on Tuesday and send out a new DVD that same day. This means I would receive my next DVD on Wednesday. That's pretty quick if you ask me. IMPORTANT: Please pay close attention to the mailing address on the Netflix return envelope. Every once in a while a DVD may take a while for delivery (I find this true with a lot of the older movies). Check the return address! If it is not from your local distribution center, this is why delivery was delayed. Do NOT send your DVD back in that envelope. Only use envelopes that have your local distribution center address. I normally put 2 DVDs in one envelope so that I have an extra envelope with my local distribution center address to use at a later time. You only need a few extra envelopes because Netflix will always send you a return envelope.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Choose the Right Plan - I switch plans all the time, if you choose the wrong plan, you can easily switch it online. I am currently enrolled in the 3 at-a-time plan. How many DVDs can you watch in one month? If you average per DVD rental, which plan would be the best deal? Let's say you can watch 8 DVDs in a month. That's about using my DVD rental average. The 3 at-a-time plan is .99 and the 2 at-a-time plan is .99. In this case, the 2 at-a-time plan is a better deal because you got worth of DVD rentals for only .99. I would never choose the 1 at-a-time (Unlimited) for .99 or the 1 at-a-time (2 a month) for .99 because if you use my average, Netflix is getting the better deal.

Getting New Releases - People always complain to me that they never can get New Releases from Netflix, yet I always get New Releases. You'll have to test this one for yourself, but if you're in Honolulu, and put your DVDs in the mail on Friday (Saturday and Sunday also work, but Friday works best for me). Netflix will receive your DVDs on Monday. New movies are normally released on Tuesday, but Netflix already has the DVDs ready for shipment on Monday. Netflix will send out the New Releases on Monday, and I will get them in the mail on Tuesday. When I first started using Netflix I rarely ever got any New Releases until I figured this out. I simply returned one DVD on Wednesday, one on Thursday, and one on Friday and waited to see what movie on my queue was sent as Netflix received each DVD. As long as the New Release was at the top of my queue, I would normally get the New Release delivered on Tuesday. If I missed the first shipment of a New Release, chances are I would not get the New Release for a while. I can cut down the waiting time if I miss the first shipment, by having one open delivery position, and not having anything on my queue except for the New Release. This cuts down on the amount of DVDs I rent in a month, but if I missed the first shipment of New Releases, this almost ensures that I will get the New Release on the next shipment. You could just have New Releases on your queue, but then you wouldn't get your moneys worth.

"Throttling" or "Smoothing" - Netflix denies that they "throttle" accounts, but I personally experienced throttling. Throttling or smoothing is Netflix giving priority to people who rent less DVDs. I was on the 3 at-a-time plan and I rented a total of 24 DVDs per month. This went on for about three months and then I started receiving movies from other distribution centers on a weekly basis. Because the DVD came from another distribution center, delivery time was more than doubled. In a few instances my DVDs took 3-5 days to be delivered. Netflix even sent me the same broken DVD twice. I decided to look for answers online and found a Netflix forum. Forum members talked about "throttling", and I wondered if this was the case for me. I started to watch less DVDs (12 a month) and my delivery schedule went back to normal. I do not think this was a coincidence.

Netflix wants to make a profit, but they don't make a profit off of someone who rents DVDs frequently. If the amount of DVDs you rent, calculated at per DVD is greater than what your monthly rate is, Netflix doesn't make as much money; therefore, Netflix gives priority to those who rent less. If there is a limited quantity for a particular movie, this means the infrequent renter will get a higher priority and the frequent renter may not get the movie, or the movie will come from another distribution center which will cause a delay in shipping. This is a little sneaky, but if Netflix didn't do this, new customers wouldn't be able to get the DVDs they requested, and Netflix would most likely lose that person as a customer, and then no more Netflix.

Broken, Lost, Scratched, not Playable DVDs - Over the years I have received less than 6 broken DVDs. The majority of the broken DVDs I received were during the time when I was renting 24 DVDs a month. It has been a while since I received a broken DVD. I have received only two DVDs that were not Playable in either my home DVD player or my PC. I received only one DVD that was scratched badly enough that it would not play in my PC or my DVD player. I have personally lost only one DVD over the last three years. When sending your DVD back in the prepaid envelope, make sure there are no sticky surfaces on the outside of the envelope. I remember putting two envelopes in the mail because one was sticking to the other. Netflix only received one of the envelopes. Netflix is very good about broken, lost, scratched, or not playable DVDs. I have never been charged for any of these items.

Netflix provides a great service, and Netflix also allows you to watch some movies instantly on your PC. Your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements, you will also need a fast Internet Connection, and only older movies have this feature. The quality is not that great using this method, but most older movies are not of good quality to begin with. I think this feature is great and it's already included in your monthly fee. The competitor site didn't have several older movies that I wanted to watch, and the ability to go to a local store didn't appeal to me as that is the exact reason why I selected Netflix, I didn't want to get in my car and drive, and with gas prices going up, having DVDs delivered to my home is much more convenient. I hope these tips were useful.

Portable LCD Color TV

A portable LCD color TV is in vogue. Everyone wants it, as it is very fashionable lately. The old box-like TVs with cathode ray tube screen technology are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Do you know why? Apart from being old fashioned, these televisions are too heavy to lift. That is to say that you can only watch your favorite program at one place. Portable varieties are now available to make life easier and very versatile. If you have not seen any of these so far, then you are missing a lot of fun.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

By owning one or more of these, you can expect to have entertainment anytime anywhere. For the simple fact that they are modern, these LCD color TVs have very many advanced features. They offer all the benefits that other latest models have. They have a modern LCD screen in place of a traditional CRT type. Therefore, you can expect that the screen is bigger and thus attractive to watch. A ten point two inches display is perhaps the largest you can come across.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Although this TV's display is this big, you can still refer to it as handheld. It comes with a detachable stand. Whenever you want to bring a television close to you, simply remove its stand. Then place it on your laps, bed or anywhere else. Note that it is lightweight and cannot make you feel tired quickly. Are you a movie aficionado? If yes, a wide screen portable LCD color TV is your best choice. Most of them come with a DVD player. As a result, you can buy all movie DVDs you desire.

Then, you can watch them from anywhere, including a car, train, ship and so on. As you shop around, do make sure that a gadget has a digital tuner. Without an antenna, your TV cannot receive a signal and thus you will not enjoy it. Some of the products have an analogue turner. Those who value technology will instead go for the items with digital antenna.

If you do not want this big screen style, then go for slightly smaller ones. There are moveable LCD color TVs that are perfect handheld. Some even look as if they are pocket size. If you really want to carry around this entertainment device, now you have a wide range of choices. These are serving both old and young generations. Today, do not be left behind. Buy the small and cheaper styles for your bigger children too. Are you looking to buy one online?

If yes, try not to rush a shopping exercise. Read product reviews first. Even if a product seems cheap and fun to have, it probably is not. Note that other people have bought such a product earlier. It is a good thing that most of them are kind enough to write reviews. Read all this information to know which brand is good for you. Casio portable lcd color tv styles are popular today. You can even find other brands' televisions, such as LG and others. Try choosing a cheaper, but quality model for yourself.

Electronics Insurance - Are Your Electronics and Computers Covered by Your Insurance?

There is a lot of misinformation today about consumer electronics and how it is treated by insurance companies. Most people I talk to think that if they have homeowners or renters insurance, their consumer electronics are covered.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

But they usually find out that their assumptions aren't true...at claims time.

Car Tvs And Dvd Players

Sure, some of the property is covered. But there are a bunch of limits and exclusions that will surprise you if you have a loss and file a claim.

Don't wait until claim time to learn about this important coverage. Read this article carefully and make good decisions about your coverage.

Twenty years ago, consumer computer usage and ownership was not all that common. If you owned a cell phone, you carried it in a bag the size of a small purse. There were few home fax machines. Answering machines were pretty common, but voicemail was still on the horizon. Scanners were non-existent. Printers and copiers were huge and expensive, and you didn't see them in most homes. If you were the rare person who had satellite TV, the dish was about eight feet across and sat out in the back yard. And Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and MP3 players had not been invented yet.

But today....

In our home we have:
o two desktop computers with monitors
o four laptop computers
o four printers
o one stand-alone fax machine
o one combination fax, scanner, copier
o three TVs
o two VCRs
o one digital video camera with tripod for our home recording studio
o one audio mixing board, one microphone, one amplifier, two external soundcards, and a 500GB hard drive, all for our home recording studio
o two DVD players
o two cell phones, one smartphone, each with voicemail
o one satellite TV system with a 24" dish on the roof
o two Ipods

Your home may not have that amount of electronics, but then again, you might have more. The way that consumer electronics prices have tumbled over the years makes ownership much easier for more and more people.

But...is it covered? Does your homeowners or renters insurance cover your electronics?

We run three separate businesses out of our home. Most of our electronics are used in our businesses.

Do you have a home business? There are millions of home businesses...everything from home daycare to a service business to multilevel marketing businesses. Many times, those entrepreneurs own office electronics for their home business. Do you use your computers and other electronics for any kind of home business? Even if you're answering office email on your home computer, it could be considered "business use."

Are they covered by YOUR homeowners policy?

Are they covered if they are business-related?

What happens if your desktop or laptop computer is stolen, either from home or away from home? Is the theft covered by your homeowners insurance policy?

If you're carrying your laptop through an airport anywhere in America, your laptop is at huge risk for theft. (See more below) What if your laptop is stolen while you're in the airport?

Here is the answer to those questions...

MAYBE!!

In the Homeowners or Renters Policy, Coverage C, Contents, there are special limits of ,500 for "property, on the residence premises, used primarily for business purposes." The policy says there is a 0 limit for "property away from the residence premises used primarily for business purposes." Of course, you will have a deductible to pay first, so if your deductible is 0 or more, you won't get ANY money from the insurance company for this loss.

Are your personal electronics covered? Yes, but only for the following perils:

o Fire or lightning
o Windstorm or Hail
o Explosion
o Riot or Civil Commotion
o Aircraft (not in aircraft, but if aircraft fall on your stuff.)
o Vehicles (not in vehicles, but if vehicles crash into your stuff.)
o Smoke
o Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
o Theft
o Falling Objects (stuff falling onto your stuff)
o Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet
o Accidental Discharge or Overflow of Water or Steam
o Sudden and Accidental Tearing Apart or Bursting (of a steam or hot water system).
o Freezing
o Sudden and Accidental Damage from an Artificially Generated Electrical Current
o Volcanic Eruption

As I said above, the policy limit for business electronics at the residence is ,500.

If your laptop or other portable electronics are stolen from your car, there is no coverage under your Auto insurance for the theft.

Also remember, that under Coverage C, Contents, payment is made on an Actual Cash Value basis, not Replacement Cost Value. The only way to get RCV is to add the Contents Replacement Cost endorsement to your policy. It's not automatic, you have to request it.

How about other kinds of damage that your computer might sustain?

o Accidental damage, such as dropped equipment, falls, liquid spills and auto collisions.
o Water damage

Those kinds of damages are not covered under your homeowners or renters policy.

And what about the software and sensitive data in your computer? Is that covered, too?

Not likely. In the Homeowners and Renters policies, under the "Property Not Covered" section, "business data, including data stored in computers and related equipment" is not covered.

So, to be fully covered, you'll need to buy some additional coverage.

COMPUTER AND PERSONAL ELECTRONICS INSURANCE

The leading company in the world for computer and portable electronics insurance is Safeware Insurance. They have programs for students, individuals, small and large businesses and schools at very competitive rates.

Let me take a few minutes and tell you about their outstanding insurance product.

If you own:

o Desktop or Laptop Computers
o Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
o Smartphones
o Digital cameras
o MP3 players
o Scanners/Faxes/Copiers
o Printers
o DVD players
o Flash drives
o Servers
o External hard drives
o Digital camcorders
o Peripherals that connect to your computers through an USB port, Firewire, PCMCIA or another input

All of these electronic products need special insurance coverage not provided in Homeowners or Renters policies.

Did you know these facts about computers?

o Accidental damage is the number one cause of loss
o Theft is number two cause of loss
o Power surge is number three
o Manufacturer warranties do not protect your computer from accidental damage or theft
o Even though some manufacturers do offer special "damage only" coverage, they do not offer coverage for theft, power surges, natural disasters or vandalism.

You already know how easy it is to have electronics with replacement value in excess of ,500. There are loaded desktops and laptops that easily exceed ,500 EACH.

So, you have some choices:

1. Call your agent and buy a Personal Property Endorsement to add coverage to your homeowners or renters policy. Downsides to this choice are (a) many endorsements only pay the Actual Cash Value of the damaged property, not replacement cost, and (b) perils like Accidental Damage, Drops, Falls, Cracked Screens, Liquid Spills and Auto Collisions are not covered.

2. Buy a custom policy that just adds special coverage for your computers and other electronics, like:

o Desktops
o Laptops and notebooks
o Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
o Smartphones
o Digital cameras
o MP3 players
o Scanners/Faxes/Copiers
o Printers
o DVD players
o Flash drives
o Servers
o External hard drives
o Digital camcorders
o Peripherals that connect to your computers through an USB port, Firewire, PCMCIA or another input

Safeware's policies cover Accidental Damage, Drops, Falls, Cracked Screens, Liquid Spills and Auto Collisions.

Business Electronics

In May 2006, burglars stole a laptop from the home of a data analyst at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The laptop contained the sensitive personal information of over 26 million veterans and military personnel. The FBI said that the laptop was recovered after an informant "snitched," motivated by a ,000 reward.

But it's not just organizations that deal with consumer data that are concerned about thefts. Companies whose employees have laptops are naturally concerned with the value of the computer when it is the company that owns the laptop.

The Ponemon Institute, a privacy risk management think tank, released an extensive study in June 2008 entitled "Airport Insecurity : The Case of Missing and Lost Laptops." They studied laptop security at 106 American airports and found that there is an average of 12,000 laptops lost, missing or stolen at American airports PER WEEK! The airport with the worst record is Los Angeles International, with about 1,200 per week. The nation's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield, was in eighth place with 450 per week.

Further, the study found that only 33% of the laptops within the airport's Lost and Found Departments are ever reclaimed! That means that the remaining 67% of unclaimed laptops are either sold or disposed of by airport authorities. Can you imagine the amount of sensitive personal and business data contained in those laptops? No one knows what happens to that data, but it is ALL at risk. The Identity Theft risks are astronomical.

Safeware's policy covers business electronics for the hazards the homeowners, renters or business insurance policy does not cover.

Education Coverage

Students face a higher risk of damage or theft than a normal adult user. Students can experience accidents when they're putting their stuff into their locker, or accidentally get bumped in a busy hallway, or when they're running to the bus. A soft drink could be spilled on the keyboard, or they could sit their laptop bag down somewhere and later find it missing.

This policy protects students' computers against Accidental Damage, Theft, Vandalism, Power Surge, and Natural Disasters at any location within the USA, Canada and while in transit.

Small Business Coverage is for any sized business with electronics property values up to ,999, covering Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Vandalism, Power Surge and Natural Disasters.

Commercial Coverage is a group plan for organizations that have electronics property values in excess of ,000. Coverage can be one of the following: Comprehensive (Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Vandalism, Power Surge, and Natural Disasters); Theft ONLY, or Accidental Damage ONLY.

The Commercial policy can benefit organizations such as:

o Schools and colleges that want to make their student's notebook computers more safe and less at risk.
o Corporations issuing notebooks and laptops to their workers, and wishing to minimize their risk of capital loss.

In these organizations, the equipment is owned by the corporation or school and used by the employee or student. Experience has shown that if an individual does not own the computer, he or she is likely to take less care of the item than if they owned it themselves. Schools and businesses need to insure their equipment against the perils that could turn their expensive equipment into unusable junk.

Safeware Insurance policies do not depreciate for age and condition of your electronics. If you have a claim that requires replacement of your equipment, they pay for like kind and quality of the equipment you had. That's a HUGE difference from the Homeowners and Renters policies, and could mean thousands more dollars to you in a claim.

Worldwide Coverage is an endorsement that adds global coverage to your policy for a very low price. Standard coverage is for the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Mobile Advantage insures PDAs and smartphones. You likely purchased your unit at a big discount when you signed up for a service plan. If your device is damaged or stolen, you'll have to pay full retail for another unit. However, with Mobile Advantage, you're only responsible for the deductible per incident to get a brand new device.

For more information about Personal Electronics Insurance for your student, yourself, your business or your school, contact Safeware Insurance at: safeware.com

LAPTOP RECOVERY COVERAGE

Can you get your stolen laptop back?

There is a way that you can protect your laptop, and then retrieve your laptop after it's been stolen.

Three burglary suspects were arrested on February 1, 2008 by Albuquerque police, thanks to a stolen computer loaded with tracking software. The software is called LoJack for Laptops(TM), developed by Absolute Software. The tracking software told the police exactly where to find the suspects. The police were also able to recover thousands of dollars in other stolen property at the location.

Absolute Software is the leader in Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking(TM) solutions. It works this way: You install the LoJack for Laptops(TM) software and register it at the LoJack website. If the laptop is stolen, you notify your local police and notify the LoJack Recovery Team. The next time your computer is connected to the Internet, the laptop secretly notifies the Monitoring Center of its whereabouts. The Recovery Team can track its location, and provide police with the information they will need to get a search warrant and recover your laptop.

Pricing for LoJack for Laptops(TM) starts at only .99 per year.

My friend here in Atlanta, Cole Harrison, had his laptop stolen from his car recently. He had the Lojack system on the laptop, and notified them immediately when he discovered the theft. Lojack located the laptop the next day...in Thailand.

If you want protect your laptop so you can get it back after it's been stolen, contact Lojack for Laptops at: www.lojackforlaptops.com Lojack boasts a 90% recovery rate for stolen laptops.

CONCLUSION

For only a small price, you can have the proper coverage you need to protect all your personal and business electronics. Be the smartest person on your block with the right protection. Be the hero to your business with the best coverage. YOU CAN DO IT!!
